Staff Sgt. Michael S. Zyla, 32, of Elgin Ore., was killed Dec. 13, 2005 when an improvised explosive device detonated under his HMMWV while his unit was conducting combat operations in Taji, Iraq.

Zyla was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor as a tank commander.

He joined the Army National Guards in March 1998. Mike then decided to make a career in the Army, full time in 2002 where he was stationed at Fort Riley Kansas.

This was Zyla's second deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mike was shot in the foot in the first tour.

Mike was born in Colorado and lived in several states while growing up. Mike served in the Marines for four years then moved to La Grande right out of the Marines in the mid-1990s. He later married Teresa Campbell and lived in Elgin, Oregon.

Zyla worked at a sawmill from 1998 to 2002 at the Boise Cascade Saw Mill. He was just a nicest person you could ever meet, and would help anyone in need. His greatest love is his son Mikey, he loved cars and mechanics, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.''

Survivors include his wife, stepdaughter, Emmy, 8; son, Mikey, 6; his mother and stepfather, Dennis and Irene Hogan, of Boise,and a brother, James Zyla of Spokane, WA.
