Jack was born in Udall, Kansas, to the late Robert and Helen Mayfield, the oldest of fraternal twins and the fourth youngest of nine children. He graduated from Mulvane (KS) High School, and attended Independence Junior College, Independence, KS. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.
The major portion, 27 years, of his working career was within the grocery industry. He was a corporate officer for Super Foods, Chicago, IL, Fleming Foods, Topeka, KS, and Super Value stores, Minneapolis, MN, which moved his family to many different states including Michigan, New York, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and culminating with his opening Mayfield's United Super in Seguin during the mid seventies. After selling the grocery store, Jack owned several businesses in San Antonio as well as Stor-Mor Mini Storage in Seguin.
Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served as chairman or member of several church committees. He was also a member of Sunrise Lions Club since 1987 and is a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Lions Camp for crippled children. Jack was an avid gardener and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Donna; daughter, Kim Markgraf, of San Antonio; son, Jason Mayfield and wife, Kaye, of Valdez, AK; grandchildren, Justin and Victoria "Tori"; sisters, Betty and Ruby; brother, Arthur; and numerous nieces and nephews including nephew, Robert who was like a brother.
