Artist, writer, stage designer. He studied under Adolf Hölzel at the Kunstakademie in Stuttgart, and his early works were displayed there and in Zurich, Berlin, and Cologne. He was acquainted with the Expressionist painters Franz Marc, Oskar Kokoschka, and Paul Klee. After his service in the World War, he participated in several artists' alliances, among them the November Group and Üecht, continued to exhibit his paintings, and supported himself with commercial artwork. During the Nazi era, he was ostracized as a degenerate artist, and the Munich Entartete Kunst Exhibition displayed five of his works. In 1947 he was able to publish his book Das Unbekannte in der Kunst (The Unknown in Art). His paintings became less representational and figurative and more abstract as he experimented with form and color. His was featured in numerous exhibitions in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, and in the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
