He was born and reared in Neshoba County. He received his master's degree from Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama and served his internship at Harvard Medical Teaching Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Nowell taught in Mississippi School for the Blind for 13 years before moving to Alabama where he made his home for 40 plus years. He worked for the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services and served on the original committee of Alabama School of Alcohol and Drug Studies and on the board of the Autism Society of Alabama. Mr. Nowell was a member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Parker Nowell of Philadelphia; sisters, Ivanell Tingle of Mobile, Alabama and Johnie Ruth Hooper of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Nowell was preceded in death by his brother, Raphel Nowell and sisters, Ada Duett, Marzine Agent and Claudia Breazeale Hill.
