Colonel Ludovico Pecci, whose family derived from the once powerful Pecci's of Siena, settling in Carpineto Romano in the fifteenth century, married Anna Prosperi Buzzi, a descendant of the celebrated leader Cola di Rienzo, and fathered seven children: four sons and three daughters. Of the first, Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi (1810 - 1903), rose the become Pope Leo XIII, while Giuseppe (1807 - 1890), a member of the Society of Jesus, was elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by his brother the Pope.
