A descendant of the celebrated leader Cola di Rienzo, Anna Prospero Buzzi married Colonel Ludovico Pecci, whose family derived from the once powerful Pecci's of Siena, settling in Carpineto Romano in the fifteenth century, and mothered seven children: four sons and three daughters. Of the first, Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi (1810 - 1903), rose the become Pope Leo XIII, while Giuseppe (1807 - 1890), a member of the Society of Jesus, was elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by his brother the Pope.
