Sumter - Mrs Hugh C Haynsworth died late Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs Russell M Hildebrand [Frances Haynswoth]. She had been ill since Christmas.
Mrs Haynsworth was born Emilie Edgeworth Beattie in Greenville on Dec 21, 1878, daughter of the late William and Fannie Perry Beattie. She spent most of her childhood abroad and was one of the pioneer women mountain climbers. She ascended most of the major peaks in the Swiss Alps, including the Matterhorn, a feat accomplished on September 8, 1900.
Survivors include four children, Admiral Hugh C Haynsworth of the U S Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, Perry Beattie Haynsworth of Plainsfield, NJ; Miss Emilie Virginia Haynsworth of Washington, DC, and Mrs Hildebrand of Sumter, and 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
On December 5, 1906, she married Mr Haynsworth, a Sumter lawyer, and made her home in Sumter for 40 years. Mr Haynsworth died in 1944, and in 1946, Mrs Haynsworth sold her Sumter home and lived with her daughter, Miss Emilie Haynsworth in New York City, Chapel Hill, NC, Chambersburg, Virginia, and Washington, DC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 pm Saturday from the Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter. Interment will be in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg.
