U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Warren Ohio Academy, moved to Pennsylvania, in 1829, established a wholesale dry-goods business and was president of the Exchange National Bank of Pittsburgh (1839-59). In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was assistant adjutant general on the staff of Governor Curtin, chairman of the Allegheny County committee for recruiting Union soldiers during the Civil War and served as the first president of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, until his death.
