My grandfather was born in the Azores and came to this country when he was a teenager. His family settled near Fall River, Massachusetts, and, in order to more readily be accepted and find employment, changed their name from 'Carrera' to Gray. He was short in stature but tough and had a brief stint as a prize fighter. But he was also kind-hearted, a gentleman, and a devoted family man. He married Florence Riley and they had three children: James (my father), Florence, and Sarah who died in infancy (both buried in Holy Sepulchre). He died before I was born and I regret never having met this wonderful man.

Cause of death: Metastatic bladder cancer
