Professional Football Player. For seven seasons (1948 to 1954), he played at the quarterback position in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Colts. Born Frederick William Enke, Jr., the son of longtime University of Arizona college basketball coach Fred Enke, Sr., he first achieved greatness as a three sport athlete at Tucson High School. He enrolled at the University of Arizona, however his studied yielded to his service as a pilot with the United States Navy during World War II. Upon his return home, he played collegiate baseball, basketball and football with the Wildcats. He was a key member of three basketball conference championship squads and set a school record for total offensive yards for their football team. He holds the distinction as being Arizona's first major college All-American. Selected by Detroit during the 7th round of the 1948 NFL Draft, he played in 68 regular season games. He produced a career-high 1,328 passing yards with 11 touchdowns as a Detroit Lion in 1948. Following his football career, Enke became a cotton farmer in his native Arizona. He was a charter member of Arizona's Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
