Dr. E. Patterson of Belton Was Found Dead in his Bed
Belton, June 10 – The following is the report in this afternoon's Belton News of the sudden death of Hon. D. E. Patterson of this city:
Hon. D. E. Patterson Dead
Another of our well known citizens has passed to the great beyond. Hon. D. E. Patterson was discovered dead in his bed this morning by his son, who had been sleeping in the adjoining room. His physician, Dr. J. M. Frazier, was called and found him completely gone. He probably died about 4 o'clock, as at 3 o'clock he called his son to close the window of his room, and at that time appeared the same as when he retired. Death apparently came without a struggle as he was lying in the bed as if in his usual sleep.
The cause of his sudden demise was organic trouble of the heart. His condition was not very favorable on yesterday and his physician had advised him to go to the coast country for a time, and had he remained even as well as yesterday he would probably have left for Galveston today. He was able to be up town yesterday and the news of his demise came as a shock to his many friends here and over the country. He came to Belton from Georgia about 1878, and in 1880 was elected county attorney of Bell County, serving acceptably one term in that office. He then practiced law for a number of years and was afterwards elected two terms as Representative of the Legislature from this county, after which he served the district as Senator. For several years he then took no active part in politics or the practice of law, his health not being the best at that time.
(Ex-Senator Martin, whom Mr. Patterson succeeded in the State Senate, died rather unexpectedly last Saturday.)
Several years ago he was elected Mayor of the city of Belton and made a most excellent one, getting the city out of several kinks it had been in.
D. E. Patterson was a good-hearted, clever gentleman to his friends and asked no quarter with his enemies, if he had any. He was well liked by almost everybody, and his sudden death will be much regretted.
He has two sisters in the old States, one of whom only a few days ago returned home after a visit of several weeks with him here.
To the bereaved son and daughter, who were at home at the time of his death, we tender our sincere sympathy.
Arrangements have not, at this writing been made for the funeral, word from the relatives being awaited.

The funeral of Hon. D. E. Patterson will take place tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Rev. Peyton will conduct the services. Deceased will be buried with Masonic honors, having been a member of that order.

Hon. D. E. Patterson's Funeral Yesterday
The burial of ex-Senator D. E. Patterson took place yesterday afternoon and was quite largely attended. The services were conducted at the residence by Revs. C. W. Peyton of Temple and S. J. Rucker of this city. Three songs were very feelingly sung by a picked choir.
In the funeral oration, Rev. Mr. Peyton, who had been personally acquainted with the deceased ever since he first came to this city and who performed the ceremony at his marriage, spoke very highly and touchingly of the many good traits, life and character of Mr. Patterson.
At the close of the services at the home, the Masons took charge of the services and conducted the burial at the North Belton Cemetery, in a lot selected by the deceased himself some three weeks ago.
The floral tributes placed upon the grave were many and beautiful. – Belton News
