Son of Marinus Van Essen and Cornelia Rekoert Van Essen. He was preceded in death by his day-old twin sons Christian James and William Frederick on May 13, 1948 and by son Christian James Van Essen, Jr. on November 8, 1995.
Chris grew up in Colorado when the family relocated there when he was young, living first in Denver, Denver County and later in Aurora in Arapahoe County.
As an adult Chris was a carpenter by trade having spent 30 years in the construction industry. Prior to that he worked as a cab driver for the Red Cab Company in northern San Diego County, California where he had been a resident since the 1940s.
He was survived by his sister Marie Van Essen Gilmer and brother John Van Essen, nieces and nephews, and a granddaughter.
