Rev. Samuel Willard was born at Petersham April 18, 1775. He was the son of William Willard (1734-1810) and Katherine Wilder (d. 1828). He was married May 30, 1808 to Susan, daughter of Joshua and Susanna (Thaxter) Barker of Hingham. She was born October 18, 1782 and died August 24, 1857.
He was graduated at Harvard College in 1803; received the degree of Doctor of Divinity; was a Congregational minister, pastor of the church at Deerfield many years. When examined by a council of ministers and churches which had been convened for his ordination, he gave utterance to views at variance with those held by the orthodox churches, and the council declined to ordain him. A second council was called which contained a majority in sympathy with his views, or who were rather inclined to tolerate the "liberal" or "Unitarian" sentiments which he avowed, and they inducted him into office September 23, 1807.He was an attractive preacher and man; ardent in favor of total abstinence from intoxicants and the abolition of slavery. He wrote many books and pamphlets. Became blind in 1819, but continued his ministry till his resignation was accepted in 1829. After a short residence at Hingham he returned to Deerfield, where he died October 8, 1859. Children:
(1) Susan Barker, born March 27, 1810; married Luther B. Lincoln, a teacher at Deerfield and Hingham.
(2) Mary, born March 1, 1812; died unmarried July 1, 1895.
(3) Samuel, born at Deerfield October 18, 1814; married Sarah Jane Thaxter; died at Hingham September 16, 1885.
