Merselles Edison, merchant, age 30-59 years, married, and proprietor of real property, inhabits one house on 29 acres, with 4 acres improved, at Vienna, Bayham Twp, London District, Upper Canada (now Elgin Co., Ontario), residing with one married female, age 14-44 [[ presumably his wife, Susannah Roope, age 46 ]], and three children (two boys, age 6-13; one girl, age 6-13), and one single female, age 14-44; all six are natives of Canada of British origin, and all are of a religious denomination not enumerated in the census.

The last will and Testament of Mercellus Edison of the Village of Vienna, in the Township of Bayham, London District, Canada West

Mercellus Edison, considering the uncertainty of this Mortal life and being of sound mind & memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following. That is to say, I give and bequeath to my four children Ann Elizabeth & O[livia] Louisa my daughters, & P[eregrin] Mercellus & J[acob] Syrenus my sons, all my real Estate wherever situated with all the Tenements and hereditaments thereto belonging to have & to hold forever to be equally Divided, between them. And as to my personal Estate goods and chattels of what kind and nature soever. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Susan for her natural life, and at her death, the same, or whatever remains of the said goods & chattels, or the proceeds of them, to be divided Equally between my four children named above or their heirs. And lastly I do hereby appoint my wife Susan[n]ah Sole Executrix of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the Twenty first day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and Forty Nine.
