Walter Bell Garland died on 29 September 1874. In 1879–1880 Mrs. Garland moved her family to eastern Minnesota and then to De Smet in Dakota Territory, now in South Dakota.
Oscar Edmund "Cap" Garland, friend of Laura Elizabeth (Ingalls) Wilder of the "Little House" series of children's books, was her son. Florence Adelia Garland, first public school teacher in De Smet, was her daughter. Both of them make appearances in the "Little House" books set in De Smet.
Mrs. Garland died in 1913 at De Smet. Her mother and a brother, George, are supposed to be buried nearby as well.
