US Air Force Major General. A highly-decorated officer, he distinguished himself during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Raised in Richmond, Virginia, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma and earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. After graduation he began his lengthy military career, when he enrolled with the Aviation Cadet Program and was commissioned second lieutenant in 1949. He experienced flying missions during the Korean War and later was promoted to flight commander with a squadron in Japan. During the Vietnam War, he saw action as Commander of the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron and flew 337 combat missions. In 1976, he was elevated to the rank of major general. During the course of his career, he earned the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, the Presidential Unit Citation Emblem and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with Combat "V". Among one of the most prominent positions General Miles held was Chief of the United States Assistance Advisory Group in Iran in 1976.
