Hugh was the son of Edward Johnson and Margaret Sturdy.

He was married to Elizabeth Winifred Sturdy in 1905.

The following was reported about his death:

A former resident of Goderich, Frank H Johnston, who has been Captain of the "Winding Gulf" of the Mystic Steamship Co, on an Atlantic Seaboard run for the last 13 years passed away on his ship on Thursday night while on route from Boston to Galveston. Death was due to heart attack. The body was set ashore at Southport, N.C. Captain Johnston was a son of the late Mr and Mrs William Johnston who lived on Newgate Street in Goderich. He was in his 58th year and was a well know Great Lake Captain before transferring to the Ocean Line. He maintained homes in Boston and on Hwy 8 in Goderich Township. His wife, who had returned a short time ago to their Goderich Township home, received word of his death on Friday last and left immediately to take charge of the body. Besides his wife, one brother William Johnston of Windsor survives.
