Born to a very prominent Dubuque County (Iowa) attorney, McNeely was educated in public schools and showed her aptitude for writing while in high school when her column was published in the local newspaper. In 1905, she collaborated with Mrs. Edith Stokely on her first story Miss Billy. When She Came Home From College was McNeely's next story. Other stories from her included Rusty Ruston and The Jumping Off Place. It was the story The Jumping Off Place, a story about homesteading in South Dakota, which earned her the Newbery Honor in 1930. McNeely was known as one of the most notable writers of children's stories during her writing career. In between her books, she wrote articles for such magazines as Youths' Companion, St. Nicholas Magazine, Literary Digest, and the Saturday Review of Literature. Before her untimely passing, she had completed the story The Black Sheep. McNeely passed away after being hit by an automobile in Dubuque, Iowa.
