Gene was born 5 March 1939, in Davenport, Scott county Iowa, the youngest Son of Benjamin Joseph and Lila Hassler Boetje Schmidt.
Gene studied at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign. was a member of The US Army ROTC.
Gene was raised in the Quad Cities area most of his life. living in Milan IL since 1961, where he went to work for Roy E. Roth Pump Co. and retired in 1985. was an avid boater, water skier, motorcyclist, caring for the family dogs, and for his yard. loved spending time with his Family and friends, especially his Nieces, Nephews and great Nieces and Nephews, and several great great nieces and Nephews; and his boating crew; Dale, Michelle, Kathy and Jay Brent, Karen Dougherty and special friends Ike and Evelyn Anderson.
Surviving Gene is his Sister, Delores M. Birely; Sister in law Jeannette "Jeanny" Schmidt, Aunt, Shirley Boetje; Nieces and Nephews and their spouses, Warren (Debbie) Birely, Marvetta (Harold) Jones, George (Becky) Birely, Dale Frederick Birely, Gail (Lance) Burkert, Terry (Tommy) Kerr, Fred (Kim) Schmidt, Marianne Schmidt, Clay Schmidt, Lisa (Lance) Lewis, Shon (Melissa) Schmidt, and Hal Schmidt; Numerous Great Nieces and Nephews and Numerous Great Great Nieces and Nephews; and Several Cousins.
Gene was preceded in Death by His parents; Brother Frederick William Schmidt and Niece Karen Lynn Schmidt.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home Rock Island, IL, Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Interment will be in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island near his beloved Mother Lila Hassler Boetje Oltmans.
