James Grady Qualls was born on March 30, 1928 in Overton County, Tennessee, the son of John Patrick "J P" Qualls (1900–1978) and Addie Bell (Vance) Qualls (1901–1987).

He was married 1st to Katie Duke and 2nd {probably in the 1980s} as the 2nd husband of Edna Celia "Polly" (Tillman) Castro (1918–2018).

James was 86 years old and a resident of Donelson, Tennessee when he passed away on April 30, 2014.

Preceded in death by his 1st wife, his parents and his sister Gwendolyn M "Gwen" (Qualls) Garrett (ca 1927– ), he was survived by his 2nd wife, four daughters and three sons-in-law, two married sons, twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Serenity Mausoleum of Spring Hill Cemetery.
