US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Illinois' 18th congressional district for five consecutive terms from March 1923 until March 1933. After receiving his law degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois in 1905, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in Danville, Illinois. He served in the Illinois State Legislative Assembly from 1909 until 1923, when he was elected to the US House of Representatives, succeeding Republican Joseph G. Cannon. In 1932 he was not reelected and after his final term expired, he returned to his law practice in Danville. He died at the age of 63.
