US Senator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a United States Senator from the State of Tennessee from 1993 until 1994. Mathews will be best remembered for replacing Al Gore, who went on to become Vice President of the United States under President Bill Clinton. Born in the deep South, he attended Vanderbilt University and later obtained his law degree from the Nashville School of Law. After graduation, Mathews remained in Tennessee, where he began a lengthy association with the governor's office of that state, as he held various positions from 1950 until 1961. He served as deputy governor of Tennessee under Ned McWherter, prior to his tenure in the US Senate. After leaving Washington, he resumed practicing law privately.
