In 1831 James Madison Hill,called Matt, came from his father's home in Hillsborough, Jasper County, Georgia to Troup County, Georgia to look for new and better land. He purchased land in that year in Long Cane. The entire family moved to Long Cane in 1833. Matt, now married, established his own plantation across the river about two miles west of Lanett, Chambers County, Alabama. As the years passed, in addition to running the plantation he became a "land agent." Matt was a most zealous and devoted member of the Methodist Church.
