Marian Ruby Smith, Formerly of North CAnton , Ohio, died at the Phoebe Home in Allentown, PA, Nov 13, 2013 at the age of 99. She was the widow of Richard D. Smith, who died in 2008.
Mrs Smith was born in Aurora, Illinois, on August 28, 1914, the daughter of Arthur Christian Zimmerman and Lois Cecil Horton Zimmerman. After Graduating from East Aurora high School, she worked for a time in the office of the Boy Scouts of America before her marriage to Frank Henry Highley. They had one daughter, Judith Ann, now the Rev. Judith A. Meier, the wife of Dr. Louis A. Meier, of Norristown, PA.
Some years following a divorce, Marian married Richard Smith on May 10, 1956. She helped to set up the Income Tax Department in Canton and held the positions of Deputy Treasurer-Supervisor and Auditor. For many years she sang in the senior choir of Church of the Savior United Methodist Church and was a long-time member of the Canton Women's Chorus. She also helped to organize a Girl Scout troop at the church.
She collected first-issue plates and Hummel figurines and delighted in her cats and parakeets. She flew across the ocean several times to explore a number of foreign lands. Mr and Mrs. Smith enjoyed ballroom dancing. In her retirement she was a Stairways Counselor for the Canton City Schools, working with eight and nine-year-old high achievers.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Smith is survived by four grandchildren, Dr. Ingrid Meier Fuller (Dr. Robert Fuller) of Asbury, NJ, Diane Meier Snider of Newport News, VA, Karen Meier of Philadelphia, and Scott Andrew Christian Meier (Wendy Meier) of Audubon, PA. She also had seven great-grandchildren, Thomas and Andrew Fuller, Christopher and Michael Snider, Kareem Singleton, and Daniel and Kathryn Meier. She had one great-great-grandchild, Jaden Snider.
Interment was at Sunset Hills Burial Park and Memory Gardens in Canton.
