Frederick was born about 1836 in Saxony, Germany, the son of Margaretta Sauerwald. He was a cigar maker and a Baltimore policeman.

In 1850, Frederick was a 14 year old basket maker and lived with his family in Ward 14.3 of Baltimore, Maryland. All were immigrants to the United States and had been born in Germany. His mother, Margaret Sourwalt (52), was widowed. He also lived with Jacob (20), and William (15), who were basket makers as well, and also with Elizabeth (23), and Catherine (9). (1850 US Census)

In 1860, Frederick was aged 24 and lived in Baltimore, Maryland, with William Sauerwald (27), and his mother Margaret (60), and Charles, aged 11 months. All were born in Saxony, Germany except for Charles, who was born in Maryland. (1860 US Census)

On June 15, 1865, in Baltimore, he married Margaret Aumen, the widow of Anthony Grossman/Gusmann. She had two children from this previous marriage, Mrs. George (Mary Gusmann) Rider, (born 1860), and Mrs. Peter (Ann Gusmann) Grau (1862-1924).

The other children of his wife, Margaret, were Mrs. James Oliver (Margaret Rose Sauerwald) Durham (1865-1934), Francis William "Frank" Sauerwald (1867-1901), Catherine E. "Kate" Sauerwald (1871-1945, had 4 marriages), and Edward P. Sauerwald (1873-1917).

A salesman during 1890, he resided at 16 Garrison Lane, Baltimore City, Maryland. (R.L. Polk and Co., "Baltimore City Directory, 1890," "Fredk Sauerwald".)

Frederick was buried on February 26, 1896 in Section U Plot 181. He owns a plot in Section U, Lot 72, and there is no headstone or marker, but this section of the cemetery is notorious for missing, fallen, or covered markers.
