Thoroughbred champion racehorse. Mill Reef was bred by American Paul Mellon at his Rokeby Stud in Upperville, Virginia and raced by him in Europe. Mill Reef's wins included Europe's two most prestigious races, the Derby in England and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France. He was voted the 1971 European Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old in England and the following year, the 1972 English Champion Older Horse. During his racing career, Mill Reef won six consecutive Group One races, a record that stood for 30 years. He was ranked by Timeform as the 6th best racehorse in the world through the 20th Century. Following his retirement from racing, Mill Race was selected to stand at England's National Stud in Newmarket where he became the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1978 and again in 1987. Among his successful offspring were Reference Point who won the 1987 English Derby and Lashkari who won the 1984 Breeders' Cup Turf. Mill Reef was honored with a life-sized statue at the National Stud.
