Actress. She gained fame as an American actress on stage and screen in the 20th century. A brunette beauty, she was a student of a New Haven Roman Catholic convent who debuted in her acting career as a chorus girl in a Broadway production. Beginning in 1918, she appeared in at least 30 stage roles, including "The Postman Always Rings Twice" in 1936 and "Chicken Every Sunday" in 1944. She made at least 20 films, including "Farewell to Arms" in 1932, and had supporting credited roles in a host of films. She had much more success on stage than in films and was credited in a few films as "Mary Phillips." She did appear at least once in a television role. She was married twice, and both were actors: Humphrey Bogart from 1928 to 1937 and Kenneth MacKenna, her second husband, from August 1938 until his death in 1962. She was diagnosed with lung cancer after routine tests were done following a car accident, and following a long battle, she died from complications of the disease.
