Netherlands Royalty. He was known as Frederik of the Netherlands. As the Prince of the Netherlands, he was the son of King Willem I and Wilhelmina of Prussia. At age sixteen, he fought in the Battle of Leipzig, defeating Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's Army. During the Hundred Days in 1815, the prince was given command of a detachment of Wellington's army. Born in Germany, he came to the Netherlands at age 20 and did not speak Dutch. He continued his education Leiden University and taught by Karl Ludwig von Phull in The Hague. In 1829, he was a candidate for the Greek throne, but he declined because he did not want to be king of a country whose language and traditions were foreign to him. In 1825 he married his first cousin Louise Augusta, Princess of Prussia. The marriage produced four children with two sons dying before adulthood. His two daughters were Wilhelmina Frederika Alexandrine Anna Louise, who became the queen of Norway and Sweden, and his youngest child, Wilhelmina Frederika Anna Elisabeth Marie, who married William V, Prince of Wied and the mother of Prince Wilhelm of Wied.
