1860 Kirby census shows 8 children and 2 others in the household with Josiah. His wife Sophronia had died the previous year.

Son Josiah Grout Jr became Governor of Vermont from 1896-1898, see FindAGrave# 13114430. Son William Wallace Grout became Vermont's US Congressman.

Upon Josiah's death, all the remains of his kindred were moved from the family's farm burial site at Kirby to this family lot in Grove Cemetery. The farm is visible from this site. Notice that the separate foot stones depict slices off the tree that is shown at the top of the monument.
