Robert Burns Baxter Kennedy was adopted when he was only a few months old by close friends of the family James & Eauphaimie Storrie Kennedy who had known each other in Scotland. His mother died of the plague about 1889, and he went to live with the Kennedy's shortly thereafter. Mr. Baxter and James Kennedy worked in the coal mining industry as engineers in many states after they emigrated to the US about 1869. The family story was that Mr. Baxter was grieving for his wife and returned to Scotland.

Robert Kennedy first married Ida Smith March 2, 1910 in Jefferson County, Alabama, daughter of James B. Smith and Nora Alice H. Frazier Smith, and after she died, he married Katheryn Idella Moore on September 30, 1916 in Jefferson County, Alabama, daughter of William George Moore and Mary Elizabeth Thomas Moore.
