US Congressman. Moving with his parents to Clarence, New York, in 1822, he graduated from the Chambersburg Law School Pennsylvania, was admitted to the bar in 1839, worked as a clerk at the Navy yard in Brooklyn and later practiced of law in Buffalo, New York. Moving to Wisconsin, in 1840, he continued to practice law, was a member of the Wisconsin State House of Representatives in 1851 and Attorney General of Wisconsin, (1852-53). He was appointed by President Pierce attorney general of the Territory of Nebraska, (1855-59) and presented credentials as a Delegate-elect to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving (1859-60). He appointed by the Governor to codify the Nebraska State laws in 1866, was prosecuting attorney for Douglas County, (1867-68) and a member of the Nebraska State constitutional convention in 1871.
