Arriving in Vietnam 21 September 1968, Dwight was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV. While on a patrol his unit encountered hostile forces in a U shaped ambush and six soldiers died, as a result of hostile rifle fire including Cpl Foreman, 7 kilometers east southeast of Que Son.
