Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A veteran of the Mexican War, he served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter while in the trenches at Petersburg, Virginia, on June 23, 1864, and was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and distinguished conduct".
