Jean F. Deobold, 77, formerly of Lock Haven, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at the Manor Care Health Center, Kingston.
Born in Forty Fort, she was a daughter of the late Ralph J. and Lillian (Colan) Deobold. She was a graduate of Forty Fort High School, East Stroudsburg University, and received her master's and doctorate degrees in physical education from Colorado State University at Greeley, Colo. She began her teaching career at Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre, where she taught physical education and swimming. In 1958 she joined the Physical Education and Recreation Department at Lock Haven University, where she taught swimming, dance and secondary methods for teaching and supervised student teachers for her last 20 years at the university. She was the adviser of the Synchronized Swimming Club, the Women's Exhibition Gymnastics Team, and the sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. She also chaired the Promotions and Curriculum Committee and helped to establish the Lancaster County Student Teaching Center. After retiring in 1981, she was inducted into the Honor Roll of Service for Lock Haven University.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lock Haven, where she was active in St. Paul's Guild and the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the APSCUF Faculty Union, the professional state and national physical education associations of AAHPERD and PSAHPERD 9, and the education honorary sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph and Daniel.
Surviving are her sister, Elizabeth Jefferson, Sherman, Texas; and several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the William A. Reese Funeral Chapel, 56 Gaylord Ave., Plymouth, with the Rev. Anita J. Ambrose officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Lock Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, North Franklin Street, Kirby Health Center, Wilkes-Barre, 18702; or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 112 E. Main St., Lock Haven.
