Donald H. Brown passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the age of 94, at Westminster Village in Muncie. Though an active and successful member of the Muncie community for many decades, he will perhaps best remembered by most as the co-owner of Lowery's Candies, with his wife of seventy-two years, Thelma.

Donald was born in Kennard, IN on March 27, 1920, the son of Elmer and Stella (Hubble) Brown and was the younger brother of Audrey and Robert Brown. He graduated from Kennard High School in Henry County, IN. In 1942, he married Thelma Louise Main and was predeceased by her in May, 2013. He is survived by three children, Sharon Crecelius of Middletown, OH, Michael Brown of Helena, MT, and Vicki Good (husband, Tim) of Muncie; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Donald served in the United States Army during WW II. He was blind in one eye, and so he had to memorize the eye chart to pass the examination and be hired at Borg Warner, from which he retired after thirty years of employment. He was Charter President of Yorktown Kiwanis Club and a past member of the Dunkirk Elk's Lodge, the Masonic Temple #433 Commandry, Muncie Moose Lodge, and the Retail Confectioner's Association. He also worked as a real estate broker for John J. Todd and Fisher & Givens. During his long and active life, Donald was always ready for hard work and new adventures with friends and family.

In 1947, he and Thelma bought land on Kilgore Avenue and by himself he built a three room house which was added onto in 1955, and in which he and Thelma would set up their candy business in 1964 with their one employee, Margaret Lane. The building now houses the candy kitchen, offices, and shipping department of Lowery's Candies.

He and Thelma were avid travelers, visiting Communist China as part of a group of square dancers in a cultural exchange when Mao still ruled that nation, and they danced on the Great Wall of China. The list of nations they visited includes Israel, Russia, Japan and many others. They drove the unpaved ALCAN Highway to Alaska. By the time his children were teenagers, he and Thelma had taken them on family trips to every state east of the Mississippi and camped at every state park in Indiana. In his sixties, Don snowmobiled across Yellowstone National Park with friends. Both Donald and Thelma were avid square dancers and campers into the seventh decades of the long and happy lives which they shared with each other and with the many family and friends who knew and loved them.

Services were held in Elm Ridge Memorial Park on Saturday, June 14, 2014. A memorial celebration of Donald and his life is being planned, the date and location to be announced later. The family would especially like to thank the staff of Westminster Village for the compassion and care given to Don and Thelma. Contributions in his memory may be made to Wounded Warriors.
