US Congressman. A member of the Progressive Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district for two consecutive terms, from January 1935 until January 1939, and for another two consecutive terms from January 1941 until January 1945. Born Harry Edward Sauthoff, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1902 and became a schoolteacher. He then returned to the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1909 with a law degree, admitted to the bar, and began practicing law in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1915 he entered politics as district attorney for Dade County until 1919 and served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1925 until 1929. In 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, succeeding Democrat Charles W. Henney. After losing his bid for a 3rd congressional term to Republican Charles Hawks, Jr. in 1938, he ran against him two years later and regained his seat. In 1944 he ran for the US Senate as a third party candidate and lost. After the end of his final term in Congress, he returned to his law practice in Madison, Wisconsin, retiring in 1955. He died at the age of 87.
