U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War, he served as an adjutant in an artillery battalion, Confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Burkeville, Virginia. He was Mayor of Burkeville and a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1883-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 67.
