Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in the village of Pass, Bernard Yago entered seminary in Abidjan and was ordained priest in May 1947. Member of the teaching staff of the Minor Seminary of Bingerville and director of the Pre-Seminary École de Petit Clerics between 1947 and 1956, he pursued further studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris from 1957 until 1959. Appointed archbishop of the metropolitan see of Abidjan by Pope John XXIII, Yago received his episcopal consecration at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from the named Pontiff himself on May 8, 1960. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 2, 1983, with the title of San Crisogono, becoming thus the first cardinal from the Ivory Coast. Retiring from office in December 1994, the Cardinal spent his remaining years in Abidjan, passing away in 1997.
