Faribault Daily News, June 3, 2004:

Dr. Wayne D. Smith, age 81 of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Faribault, died February 2, 2004, at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Fla. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home In Faribault with Bishop Paul V. Dudley, officiating. Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery in Faribault. Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral, FL 33909, the River Bend nature Center, the Rice County Humane Society or to the honors choice.

Wayne David Smith, the son of Lucius and Emma ( Healy) Smith, was born on May 22, 1922 in Faribault, Minn. Wayne attended Faribault High School and graduated with the class of 1940. Following high school he served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946 during World War II and later from 1952 to 1955. After his first service time, Wayne attended the University Of Minnesota School Of Dentistry and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1951. In 1958, after his second service time, Wayne accepted a position at the Faribault State Hospital as the head dentist and remained there until he retired in 1986. He then moved to Fort Myers, Fla. During his time in Faribault, Wayne. also was the organist at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Wayne enjoyed developing and customizing his home, working with computers, working with his Ham Radio and especially enjoyed his pets and was a long time dog owner. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hope Hospice for their loving care of Wayne in his last days.

He is survived by two sisters, by a sister-in-law, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers, George and Bruce Smith; and by a life-long friend, Dr. Alan D. Fogerson.
