The 1920 Federal Census for District 0182, Holly, Prowers County Colorado indicates Dorothy, her twin brother Donald, siblings Lucille, Newton & James lived with their parents Charles C & Candace House on Sugar Factory Street. The household also included Charles House's sister-in-law, Lottie Drope and a hired man named Shelby Hayes.

Mr. House & Mr. Hayes were born in Texas, his wife and sister-in-law were born in Canada and all the children were born in Colorado. They farmed for a living.

Their neighborhood was diverse and neighbors came from Mississippi, Georgia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, the Dakotas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Kansas and other states. They worked on farms, in cream stations, garages, clothing stores, shops and the railroad. One family had an aunt living with them who spoke only German. It must have been a wonderful neighborhood in which to rear children.

But by 1930 the family had moved to the city of Los Angeles, California, added another daughter, Geraldine, after the move, and were living on Gordon Street. Son Newton was working as an actor on the stage and screen. Mr. House, still using the name Charles Chesley was the manager of a Riding Academy. Oldest daughter Lucille was working as a filing clerk. As before their neighbors had come from all over the United States and worked many different jobs to support their families.

In 1933 Dorothy married Andy Devine, a much loved gravel voiced figure in movies and later, on tv.

1940 found the family living in Hollywood, on Main Street! His name now showing as Chesley, Mr. House was still the manager of the Riding Stable with the help of his wife, Candace. Son James was now an "extra actor" in the "moving pictures" and Geraldine was still living at home. The other children were no longer in the family home.

In his family life, or perhaps public life Dorothy's Dad was known as "Jack" and his tombstone bears the name. There are two death records for him under the Social Security records, one as Jack and one as Charles C, both have the same date of birth, date of death, place of death, Mother's maiden name (Barber) and Social Security #.
