Major League Baseball Player. Considered one of the greatest fielding shortstops of all time, he played 10 years with the Cincinnati Reds before being dealt to the Milwaukee Braves on December 15, 1960 for pitchers Joey Jay and Juan Pizarro. A two-time All-Star with the Reds in 1956 and 1957 and a member of the Reds' Hall of Fame, he set many fielding records, including assists, putouts and double plays turned in a season. Many of those records have since been broken, mainly by Ozzie Smith. He won the Gold Glove the first three years it was presented from 1957 to 1959. He finished his 16-year big-league career with the New York Mets in 1966. The right-handed hitter had a lifetime .243 batting average. He managed the Milwaukee Brewers for two games in 1972 and the Mets for 53 games in 1975, both on an interim basis.
