Son of the Reverend Doctor David Henkel (Lutheran minister) and his first wife Helea Anna Maria.

It was noted in Solon Henkel's obituary that, "Owing to the extreme distances at which they live, the near relatives of Mr Henkel were unable to attend the funeral. Rev Sifford, of Newark., a brother in law of Mr Henkel, and Miss Mamie Slack of Cobden were present. Mr Henkel's parents live in Pennsylvania and were too old and feeble to make the trip."

He was an "enthusiastic" member of the Knights of Pythias, who conducted the funeral rites.

Solon A. Henkel was the husband of Emma Slack (later Emma Rendleman), and the father of silent film actress Agnes Ayres.
