Maronite Patriarch of Antioch. A native of Ain Ebel, Antoine-Pierre Khoraiche was the eldest of seven children. Entering the Patriarchal Maronite Seminary of Tyr, he was sent to Rome in order to pursue his studies Pontifical Urbanian University and later to Beirut, at Saint Joseph's Pontifical University, from where he earned a doctorate in philosophy. Ordained priest in April 1930, for ten years he taught at Sophia School in Beirut, until being named patriarchal vicar of Palestine and president of the Maronite tribunal in the Holy Land. Vicar general of the archdiocese of Tyr of the Maronites between 1940 and 1950, at the age of forty two he was appointed auxiliary for the Eparchy of Saïda of the Maronites, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Tarso on October 15, 1950. Named bishop of the same eparchy on November 25, 1957, he successively served as administrator delegate of the patriarchate of Antioch of the Maronites, episcopal delegate for Maronite seminaries and president of the executive commission of the Inter-ritual Assembly of Patriarchs and Bishops of Lebanon. Elected patriarch of Maronite Patriarchate of Antioch on February 3, 1975, he received the 'ecclesiastica communio', twelve days later. His election coincided with the coincided with the Lebanese civil war, which he soon condemned in a broadcast over Radio Beirut. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal patriarch in the consistory of February 2, 1983. Retiring from the pastoral government of the patriarchate on April 3, 1986, Khoraiche spent his last years in Beirut, passing away at his residence in 1994.
