Actress. She was an Irish-born actress of the 20th century. She began her career on the London stage but soon entered the cinema. She is best remembered for her role of Elizabeth Frankenstein in the classic horror film "Bride of Frankenstein" in 1935 and as Stella in "Great Expectations" in 1946. She also appeared in "Eyes of Fate" in 1933; "Two Hearts in Waltz Time" in 1934; "Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Rendezvous at Midnight," and "Werewolf of London" all in 1935; "Contraband" in 1940; "Blanche Fury" in 1947; "Kind Hearts and Coronets" in 1949; and "Background" in 1953. Her last appearance was on stage in 1953 in the role of Anna in "The King and I." The production ran for 929 shows. She was married to producer Anthony Havelock-Allan from 1939 to 1952 and in 1953 to politician John Profumo, who fell from grace, resigning from Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's cabinet in 1963 with his well-publicized sex affair known as the "Profumo Scandal". She and Profumo had three sons. The oldest son had Down Syndrome.
