RESCUE TASK DELAYED BY MOTOR GRIEF

Lark, Utah - A wet hoist motor today held up the attempts of rescue crews to descend a 1000-foot shaft in search of three men trapped in a lead mine fire.
Mine officials believed it would take electricians at least 24 hours to clean and dry the motor which operates the shaft's two cages. Then the searchers will don oxygen masks and try to penetrate the smoky shaft.

COMBED 7200 FEET
Meanwhile, the rescue crews, which have combed 7200 feet of tunnel, took a rest. They have been searching the U. S. Smelting, Mining and Refining Co. mine since the fire broke out Sunday.
The missing men were Leland Nielsen, 38; Claude Auguston, 41, and Gordon Meyerhoffer, 38.
On Monday, the bodies of Hoist Operator Thomas Seal, 59, and Byron Thomas, 46, were brought out of the tunnel. They had died of suffocation.

CHANCE MEN ARE ALIVE
The other three were believed to be at the 1000-foot level of the shaft, 500 feet below the spot at which the fire supposedly was burning.
There was a chance they were alive. Mine officials said there were numerous fresh air pockets.
Most of the gas and smoke that previously hindered the searchers had been blown out by gigantic fans.
