Physician. A virologist, he will be best remembered for his extensive research and treatment for patients with HIV/AIDS. He was widely regarded as a trailblazer in his field. He attained his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1981 and six-years later, he received his Doctorate. As early as 1982, when AIDS became widespread, Dr. Lange was among the top researchers who determined the relationship with the blood of the carrier, in association with HIV becoming full-blown AIDS. Additionally, he was a key figure in the development of the drug Retrovir for AIDS therapy. Dr. Lange, along with his wife and nearly 300 total passengers and crew members perished when the Malaysian Airlines' plane they were aboard was downed over a war zone near the Ukraine and Russian border. Dr. Lange was to attend an AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia two-days later. (bio by: C.S.)
