Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of São José, Jaime de Barros Câmara entered seminary in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, and was ordained priest in Florianópolis of the first day of the year 1920. For the next fifteen years, he served within the archdiocese of Florianópolis, first as substitute to the cathedral pastor and later as coadjutor of the parish of Tijucas, chaplain of the Sisters of the Divine Providence, pastor of the metropolitan cathedral and rector of the Azambuja-Brusque Seminary. At the age of forty one, he was elected the first bishop of the newly erected see of Mossoró by Pope Pius XI, receiving his episcopal consecration on February 2, 1936. Taking possession of the diocese on the following April 26, during his episcopate, he founded the local seminary and a home for the elderly. Paying special attention to the instruction of the workers, mainly those employed in factories where anti-Christian and demagogic ideas were proliferating, the Bishop was promoted to metropolitan see of Belém do Pará on September 15, 1941. There he once again dedicated a special attention towards the plight of the workers. Transferred to the metropolitan see of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on July 3, 1943, Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 18, 1946, receiving the title of Ss. Bonifacio ed Alessio four days later. Convoking and presiding the first archdiocesan synod of Brazil in 1949, the Cardinal was named by the Holy See the first vicar of the Military Ordinariate of Brazil, taking possession on January 22, 1951, in the presence of the President of the Republic and the entire cabinet. In November that same year, he was named the first ordinary of the Ordinariate of the Faithful of the Eastern Rites of Brazil. President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), between 1958 and 1963, during his tenure in São Sebastião, he founded the Ação Social Arquidiocesana for the spiritual and social needs of the population of Rio de Janeiro; rebuilt the Seminary of São José in Rio Comprido; founded numerous parishes; established the Comissão Arquidiocesana de Música Sacra and the Sociedad Brasileira de Arte Cristã; as well as the publication 'A Província Eclesiástica do Rio de Janeiro' and the promotion of the circulation of the daily 'Correio da Noite'. He passed away suddenly at the Palácio Paulino in Aparecida while attending celebrations commemorating the first mass celebrated in Brazil on the day of the twenty fifth anniversary of his elevation to the Sacred College of Cardinals.
