U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Franklin College, he taught school and was appointed school superintendent of Switzerland County, in 1873. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1875, and commenced to practice law in Vevay, Indiana. He was county treasurer, (1875 to 1877) a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880, a member of the Indiana State Senate, (1886 to 1894), and served as acting Indiana Lieutenant Governor, (1891 to 1894). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William S. Holman, and reelected to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh, and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1905. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was Vevay City Attorney, (1912 to 1916), and judge of the circuit court of the fifth judicial district, (1916 to 1922).
