Charles the son of Douglas Drysdale and Ruth Drysdale of Birmingham Alabama enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 14 1968 in Montgomery AL. He arrived in Vietnam in December where he was assigned to and served with Company L, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of January the Battalion continued on Operation TAYLOR COMMON, searching the enemy Base Area in Thuong Duc, and Duc Duc Districts of Quang Nam Province. The presence of Marines in the mountainous terrain denied the enemy freedom of movement and the ability to resupply their forces.

On January 26, two kilometers southeast of Hill 937 Company L was hit with small arms fire to their front wounding two Marines. The lead platoon opened fire and as two men moved forward to retrieve the wounded, the enemy then open fire from both sides. A second platoon reacted in support and the Marines were able to retrieve and withdraw with their casualties before airstrikes were requested. Two men were killed and several were wounded during the contact with the enemy, one of the casualties was PFC Charles Drysdale who was killed in action by hostile rifle fire.
