Mrs. JULIA HAMILTON BRISCOE, eldest daughter of the late Governor William T. Hamilton of Maryland and Clara Jenness Hamilton, and the widow of James T. Briscoe, died this morning at the family home where she was born, 210 West Washington Street.

Mrs. Briscoe had been in ill health for the past four months but her death came as a shock to her many friends here and in other sections of Maryland.

Like her distinguished father, Hagerstown's only contribution to the highest elective office Maryland could bestow, Mrs. Briscoe was a staunch Democrat and was honored when she was names Maryland's first Democratic Committeewoman. Her activities in behalf of better government in her state were recognized by the late Governor Albert C. Ritchie, who appointed her a member of the Commission for Great Economy in State Government. Mrs. Briscoe also was active in the affairs of the Democratic party nationally, being a charter member of the National Democratic Club at Washington and her advice was often sought in matters of policy.

It was Mrs. Briscoe who first saw the need of an outlet for energies of the women of this community and she founded the Forward Club, which later was to become the Women's Club, now a dominant factor in the civic and social affairs of Hagerstown.

In 1900, when Hagerstown still was a closely knit unit, with its principal residential are within a few blocks of the downtown business section, it was Mrs. Briscoe's vision again that saw the need for a suburban residential section. Mrs. Briscoe went to Baltimore, there studied the Roland Park development, one of the most beautiful in that city then, and applying the same restrictions, began the development of the beautiful Oak Hill residential section, then farm land held by the Hamilton family. Her first act was to supervise the planting of a double row of Linden trees along a wide avenue. Today those same Linden trees are a living memorial to the woman who has done so much for Hagerstown.

Some years ago Mrs. Briscoe presented to the City of Hagerstown a strip of land just off Oak Hill along Prospect Avenue, which has been developed into a park which was named Briswcoe Park after the donor.

Upon the death of her father in 1888, being the eldest child, Mrs. Briscoe took over the management of the large Hamilton estate which included business properties, the Hotel Hamilton and considerable real estate. Mrs. Briscoe has been trustee for the estate of Clara G. Hamilton.

Two brothers, Richard J., former editor of the Daily Mail, and William t. Hamilton, Hagerstown; and two sister, Mrs. Hayden Eames, Cleveland, Ohio; and Mrs. Marshall Wilson, Hagerstown, survive.

Funeral services were held from her late residence at 210 West Washington Street; interment was in the family burial lot in Rose Hill.
